How to Setup a VPN on a Router

You need as much internet security as you can get these days. From telecommuting to watching your favorite program on a smart TV, the typical consumer’s attack surface is three to four times larger than it was when most of us just had one computer. That’s not just a concern; it’s also a hassle, since you’ll need to install security software on all of those devices. While you can’t avoid installing different antivirus software on each device, you can make your virtual private network (VPN) worries less vexing by bypassing the per-device process and instead installing a blanket VPN on your router.

VPNs are essential for internet security for a variety of reasons. For starters, they make your computer seem to be at a place other than where you are. That’s because you’re connecting to a VPN provider’s server and conducting your web sessions from there. When cookies or Big Bad Government Agencies attempt to track you down via your online activity, they will discover the VPN provider’s server rather than you. Even better, hundreds or thousands of people will be performing the same thing on the same server at the same time.

“You have a situation in which your location is concealed and your encrypted data stream is very difficult to discern.”

VPNs, on the other hand, do more than just anonymize your session; they also encrypt your traffic. VPNs may employ a number of encryption techniques, the most common of which is the AES 128-bit or 256-bit standard. Combine that with anonymization, and you have a scenario in which your location is hidden and your individual encrypted traffic stream is extremely difficult to distinguish, because your stream of encrypted gobbledygook is one of hundreds or thousands of other streams of encrypted gobbledygook pouring into and out of that same server farm.

That is the allure of a VPN: you obtain all of these advantages simply by installing a basic web client on your computer and ensuring it is operational before beginning any other online or cloud connection.

However, if you have numerous devices in your house, particularly if you suspect some of them are running linked software that begins before you’ve even had a chance to activate your VPN, something more consistent may be needed. That’s when you should install a VPN client on your wireless router; anybody using your local network to surf the online or use a cloud service will be utilizing the VPN by default, since they can’t connect to the internet without leaping through that always-on hoop.

While some routers now allow connecting to VPN services using OpenVPN or the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), this functionality is unlikely to be found on most consumer-oriented routers. It’s also not a simple task to set up. Some of the more costly routers will enable VPNs through those features, particularly if the maker intends to sell them to small companies as well as households.

In addition, a few (increasing) VPN providers have taken on the job of ensuring that their VPN client may be installed on a router’s firmware—more on that below. However, since such clients aren’t always ubiquitous, you’ll require a router from the VPN provider’s compatibility list. While that is fantastic, you are probably satisfied with your existing network, and spending money on a new router simply to obtain a VPN client may not be an appealing choice.

This forces you to look for alternative firmware that supports either OpenVPN or the client of your preferred VPN service. The most common of them is DD-WRT, although Tomato is an alternative for people who have a Broadcom-based router. DD-WRT is the more mature of the two and is compatible with a wide range of routers, both old and new.

Alternatively, you may convert an old x86 PC into a router by installing DD-WRT on it and adding an additional network port through an expansion card. This does need some extra effort, but if you have the skills, it’s a fantastic opportunity to build yourself a very configurable and powerful router at a low cost.

Most people, on the other hand, will stick to installing DD-WRT on their compatible router, which not only does what it’s supposed to do but is also a fantastic method to upgrade and extend your networking capabilities. The only disadvantage of utilizing your router in this manner is that you risk voiding your warranty or, worse, rendering the router totally unusable if anything goes wrong. The easiest method to prevent this is to install DD-WRT on a router that is not only supported, but has been supported for a long time.

Because the development team has had plenty of time to iron out any bugs, the longer your router has been maintained, the easier the firmware upgrade will be. You should also be able to locate a help forum with people who are acquainted with both your router and DD-WRT. Some router manufacturers have similar forums linked to their help sites, although they are more frequently found at independent online places, such as the main DD-WRT website or Reddit.

I updated three routers in order to create this post. The LAPAC1200 AC1200 Dual Band Access Point and the WRT1200AC v2 were both Linksys products. While the update on the LAPAC1200 failed, most likely due to the fact that it is not a full-fledged router, it went well on the WRT1200AC. I decided to perform another installation just for fun on an old, generic Windows PC that I had equipped with two gigabit network interface cards (NICs). That procedure likewise went well, and although it is noticeably larger than the WRT1200AC, it is still the fastest of the two.

Every router is a little different, but most Linksys routers follow a similar pattern when it comes to logging in and making configuration changes. That procedure is similarly comparable to that of most other router manufacturers, thus it serves as a suitable example for this article. The first step is to get your router’s internet Protocol (IP) address. On Microsoft Windows 10, go to the Start menu, type Command Prompt, and press Enter. Then enter ipconfig and press Enter once more. You should see something similar to what is seen in the image below, but with different address numbers. The IP address of your router will be displayed as the Default Gateway. That is in this case. Then, launch your browser and enter your router’s IP address as the URL (http:\\ This will bring you to a login screen for your router’s administrative panel.

If you’ve never updated your router’s username and password, searching for your router model on the Linksys website should take you to a support page with the default credentials provided. If it is not a Linksys router, just locate your original installation instructions from when you originally installed the router, and the default credentials will be present. If that document is no longer available, go to the website of your router’s manufacturer to discover instructions for restoring your router to factory settings. The default credentials should also be present. If it doesn’t work, you’ll need to contact your router’s support team.

“Go to your router manufacturer’s website and look for information on resetting your router to factory defaults.”
Once you’ve gained access to the router’s administrative capabilities, look for the console that enables you to upgrade the firmware. This is usually located under the Administration tab. Check the company’s website for specific instructions for Linksys routers. Similar instructions will be accessible on the help sites of other router manufacturers.

This is probably the most critical step, since if anything goes wrong, you may possibly “brick” (that is, make your router unusable). This may occur as a result of software incompatibility or a power loss at a crucial stage of the update process. I’m not trying to frighten you—the overwhelming majority of DD-WRT installations work perfectly—but the truth is that something terrible may happen to the router, so please proceed with caution.

Navigate to this website ( and input the model name of your router. You will be given a list of possible applicants. Choose the one that corresponds to the brand and model number of your router, and then download the bin file.

Now, from the Firmware Update screen, upload the bin file and wait for it to finish. If everything went as planned, your router will be running DD0-WRT and therefore compatible with OpenVPN. Don’t be alarmed if things go wrong and your router thinks you’re no longer on speaking terms. That is what occurred to me when I attempted to upgrade the Linksys LAPAC1200 Access Point. Simply follow my example: Follow the steps on this website ( from a Bad Flash). With luck, you’ll be able to return to a decent starting point and attempt again.

When everything lights up as it should, the default IP address of a fresh DD-WRT installation is Enter that address as a URL into your PC’s web browser again, and you’ll see a page prompting you to reset the default login and password. Following that, you may proceed to the fundamentals of configuring your new router. For corporate customers and those with more sophisticated network needs, DD-WRT has a plethora of additional options, thus going through them all is beyond the scope of this tutorial. However, for most residential and small business installations, you’ll need to configure the connection type for your wide area network (WAN), which is your internet service provider. In general, this is typically located under the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), so if you’re not sure where to go, that’s a decent place to start.

To begin, connect your router to the internet on one side and your local area network on the other. Then configure any other network settings you need, such as Quality of Service (QoS) or access restrictions. Only after the router is completely operational should you think about installing a VPN client.

To do so, go to the Services page and choose the VPN tab. Check the Enable Bubble next to “Start Open VPN Client.” There is currently no one set of instructions for making this work. Simply follow the directions for your VPN provider, and you’ll be fine.

DD-WRT includes a great Status page with a VPN part that displays whether or not you’re connected and whether or not everything performed as expected. If you want to go the additional mile, you may look up your IP address in Google by entering “What is my IP?” If your VPN is functioning correctly, you should receive something different than what you began with since you’ll be browsing to Google from your VPN vendor’s server rather than your PC. If it occurs, congratulations! You may now surf the web anonymously across all of your connected devices.

Uptobox Bans Americans After Visa and MasterCard Pressure

The popular Uptobox file storage service has closed access to US users under the pressure of Visa and MasterCard. Credit card companies are asking taxpayers to stop sending cyberlockers in case of crime.

After trying to establish stricter anti-terrorism laws in the United States, Hollywood and the big brands have tried to stop the money of so-called fake places.

Paid jobs are some of the leading and most exciting industries that have already helped negotiate deals between VISA, MasterCard, PayPal, PaySafeCard and other players.

As a result, large file storage services have had difficulty accepting payments from users. The popular Cyberlocker Uptobox is one of the most recent injuries on the project, TorrentFreak has learned.

“Our paid advertisers have received notifications from Visa and MasterCard telling them to stop receiving credit card payments for our work, according to the penalties,” the Uptobox supervisor Guillaume tells us.

“This is the result of pressure from video studios on Visa and Mastercard,” he adds.

Uptobox is currently still accepting credit card payments through a retailer, but has decided to sever all ties with the United States in order to avoid damage.

This means that U.S. tourists they are not allowed to enter the page. Instead they receive the following information. Sorry, is not available in your country. ”

Uptobox will consider lifting the ban if European donors want to participate in debt. However, considering the tightness of Visa and MasterCard in this case can be tricky.

According to Guillaume, MasterCard appealed to Hipay and Allopass creditors, following a Disney request. In addition, PayPal has rejected Uptobox requests for file transfers.

According to figures released last year more than 1,500 “robbers” were cut off from donors between 2011 and 2013, and the list continues to grow week by week.

Despite the difficulties that Uptobox determined to keep its business afloat. Cyberlocker is currently looking at several payment methods including Bitcoin.

“Paying money to users is difficult at the moment, but we are confident that we will find the right way to pay for it. We are also considering supporting Bitcoin and other payment methods such as SMS, “says Guillaume.

“So far, the project is not in jeopardy, we still have a bright future ahead of us,” concludes the Uptobox writer.

Maintaining your online business listings is made easier with this solution

The use of services such as Yext, which allows company owners to update their information across various internet directories, is becoming more popular.

It was a difficult enough job for Nathan Corliss when he took over as marketing manager of the Las Vegas-based Walters Group in August of 2013. He was in charge of two automobile dealership groups on the East and West coasts, as well as two championship golf courses in Las Vegas, at the time. By the beginning of 2014, the business had grown to include 20 sites, making his work almost difficult to do.

He quickly found himself spending several hours each day to blindly checking review sites and updating and monitoring company listings across various internet directories, a task that took him several hours each day at first. His primary interest, on the other hand, was ensuring that customers easily locate his companies online. According to him, his greatest concern was that someone searching for one of our dealers might end up on a dead link or, worse, a competitor’s site.

This is the solution

Corliss recognized that uploading and maintaining his company’s information across a variety of internet directories would help his company’s search engine optimization (SEO), establish trust among search engines, and improve ranks. In order to get assistance, he registered with Yext, a New York City-based service that enables businesses to update numerous directory entries at the same time.

In exchange for directory gathering and updating, as well as review monitoring, Corliss pays Yext around $50 per location each month, according to the company. “In my opinion, it’s a good deal,” he adds.

To keep his online directories up-to-date, he just sends an e-mail to his Yext account manager, who responds with an update within 24 hours, typically sooner. Corliss is instantly notified of any negative reviews that mention a Walters Group company as a result of Yext’s reputation monitoring technology.

What were the outcomes?

Prior to Yext, Corliss was fortunate enough to be able to find the time to visit 10 key directories anytime he needed to update a company’s information. A single email to Yext may now update information in more than 50 directories at the same time.

For monitoring reviews and reacting to bad ones, the most he could do in the past was to visit a company once per week to see how things were going. “If I didn’t time it well, I wouldn’t get a negative review for a week,” he explains. “Now, those reviews appear instantly on one dashboard, which I find very convenient. I actually sleep easier at night now that I have Yext as a fail-safe.”

Obtaining a second viewpoint

In order to determine the search results for a certain search query, hundreds of ranking criteria are taken into consideration, according to Nyagoslav Zhekov, director of local search at Edmonton, Alberta-based Whitespark, which specializes in local search optimization and software development. The consistency of citations, or in this instance, online business listings, is widely acknowledged to be one of the most significant elements in search engine optimization.

One of the issues, according to Zhekov, is that very few directories have the ability for a marketing manager to automatically alter or update entries for tens to hundreds of company locations at the same time. “That is why technologies such as Yext come in handy,” he explains further.

Zhekov, on the other hand, warns that Yext is not a one-stop shop. Despite this, Yext only covers a tiny part of the local search eco-system, according to him. “You’d still need to perform some manual work with at least three additional services: Infogroup, Localeze, and Acxiom,” says the author, in order to “cover all of your bases.” Furthermore, if your company has rebranded, moved, or changed itself, Yext’s search engine may not always identify entries with obsolete information that need to be updated.”

Interpretation of Growth

Because of the fast-paced digital world, growth must be rapid, yet effective hacks may be discovered to accomplish this in a lower-cost way.

Start-ups have been capturing the imagination of the corporate world. It’s just recently that some of the world’s biggest companies, like Apple, Amazon, Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, and Facebook, were all startups. They’ve been well covered, in terms of literature about them and their founders; the success of their endeavors has been praised, and methods for growing their business have been researched. This grand aspiration that every capable entrepreneur has dreamed of has been inspired by the motivational tales of prior success. Innovative businesses are doing the same in India, identifying pain areas and developing ground-breaking solutions. Many of them have folded up, but a few of them have expanded greatly. In spite of these successes, a new venture explosion in the nation has been embraced by local and worldwide investors as well as government support. “The Start Up India; Stand Up India” program started by the Narendra Modi administration, which was introduced to encourage entrepreneurship, is among the finest possible examples.

Master Growth Hacking, written by digital marketers Apurva Chamaria and Gaurav Kakkar, promises to be a useful handbook for anybody looking to participate in the start-up ecosystem or just want to learn more about it. It is a how-to guide on acquiring and retaining customers with straightforward explanations of how to achieve customer growth, featuring various types of companies, founders’ tips, and tactical analysis on growing quickly via understanding and implementing product strategy, data analytics, and successful marketing, all resulting in quickly-acquired customers and sustained loyalty. To assist business owners with getting on their feet, the authors have furnished a plan for creating a growth hacking team.

All of these options may assist settle a major disagreement: whether expansion or sustainability is the most important factor. Fast, aggressive expansion is important in the digital world, but a business should not need to spend an excessive amount of money on that growth. In addition, another method to go about it is by using growth hacking. Sanjeev Bikhchandani, founder of Info Edge Co, writes in his introduction, “Growth hacking is about a mentality, tiny but important and sometimes counterintuitive interventions that are part of an organization’s lifeblood.” Every chapter of the book is packed with a business case study, founder’s interview, and explanation of a certain growth hacking element, and each is worthwhile. One of the business leaders that helped drive their business to the next level, such as Zomato, IndiaMART, ShopClues, UrbanClap, Paisabazaar, Furlenco, FusionCharts, WittyFeed, and UpGrad, is sharing how they drove strategy when their business was growing.

However, marketing is important. In the middle of the book, the writers include a mention of a Microsoft research that claims human attention spans (which is eight seconds) are less than those of goldfish (nine seconds). “If marketers fail to grab a visitor’s attention in the first eight seconds of her stay, she will then be more likely to seek the information she needs elsewhere,” the research warns. Online marketing, like all marketing, is filled with opportunities for advancement. This advancement includes developing unique content and messaging that engage audiences and giving them a clear path to take. In addition, several recommendations exist to improve the print advertising campaign’s effect. “FusionCharts co-founder and CEO Pallav Nadhani discusses print ad difficulties the business encountered and how FusionCharts still sees print advertising as part of their growth hacking plan.”

The book offers great, practical advice that has benefited Indian tech success stories, whose reach has skyrocketed as a result of building a large client base. You will, however, be surprised to learn that a few tricks cannot be found here that help a new company become successful. Another author has a related thought that you should consider as a business owner: put a cap on growth hacking strategies that may impact your sales. The almighty dollar!

Mastercard and Visa Under Pressure for ‘Enabling’ IPTV Piracy

The anti-terrorist group Irdeto has unveiled new data that shows how pirate IPTV services rely on reliable processors to generate revenue. Payment services such as Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal are the main sources of fraud, Irdeto says, suggesting that media companies should pose a threat like the ones that remain.

With the help of volunteer boxes, the live shooting has seen many users in recent years.

While there are hundreds of free translation sites and tools, there is also a large market for paid pirate clients, who pay a small fraction of their legal partner fees.

One company that has closely monitored this is Irdeto. The anti-girly outfit has also helped free and law-abiding citizens and helped kill some of the worst offenders.

However, the problem does not end there, even when prosecutors are involved. One of the problems is that it is easy for Pirate providers to operate openly, with the help of well-known processors such as Visa, Mastercard and PayPal.

This is one of the main findings of a study published by Irdeto this week.

Irdeto, which works with well-known clients including Comcast, Foxtel, ITV, and Maxdome, looked at 400 pirate IPTV search engines. They found that the vast majority of those, 76 percent, publicly declare their pay. Visa and Mastercard were mentioned most, followed by PayPal.

“What this proves is that criminals rely heavily on advanced platforms to help them save money and pay for surveillance,” said Mark Mulready,

VP of Irdeto of Cybersecurity Services, notes.

Much of Irdeto’s release is shown in the pie chart. This shows that Visa and Mastercard account for each of 21 percent of all payment methods of advertising. PayPal is mentioned at 9 percent and cryptocurrencies are relatively unknown, coming in at only 4 percent.

Since IPTV providers offer a number of payment options, the number of pages that use these services is probably very high, but unfortunately, Irdeto does not have this information for us.

Irdeto’s research comes with a strong message. The company suggests that media companies, which often use the same payments, may want to consider those with whom they do business.

“Obviously, it’s time for the paycheck to support the TV industry by working hard to stop supporting these IPTV sites?” He has already written.

At the moment, paid processors have little incentive to leave IPTV customers, Irdeto wrote, but if the media companies threaten to be able to connect with these companies, they can take action.

“If media outlets threaten to vote with their feet against pay-per-view platforms that support fraud, it will be exciting to see who shines for the first time,” concludes Mulready.

The bondage of slavery by donors is not new. A few years ago there were similar phones urging the same companies to stop doing business with mature cyberlockers. This eventually paid off, as more jobs were cut.

Whether or not social risks are a good way to discuss is. We suspect that Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal are ready to work alongside pirate IPTV services. Perhaps training obedience departments in these professions can work just to create risks, or even more so.
