Body: Since upgrading from 2.0.19 to 2.1.6, users no longer receive topic reply notifications or registration emails.
Environment:
• SMF: 2.1.6, fresh install, database imported.
• Host: Shared cPanel hosting (PHP 8.1).
• Email Settings: Administration > Configuration > Server Settings > Mail: set to PHP mail().
Troubleshooting:
1. Test email from Maintenance > Mail fails silently.
2. SMF error log shows: mail(): Failed to send mail.
3. No mail.log on server I can access.
Question: Is there a new SMF 2.1.x mail requirement? Should I switch to SMTP even for simple shared hosting? What’s the best practice for debugging mail() on a restricted host?
